The Cove WINS

Posted 3/8/2010 4:00:00 PM

How many of you watched the 82nd Academy Awards or as they are more commonly called the Oscars yesterday?

As usual, the Awards provided plenty of comedy, entertainment and surprises. Neil Patrick Harris entertained the audience with an opening musical number, and Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin provided great comedy. The awards also honored first time winners such as Sandra Bullock for Best Actress and Kathryn Bigelow winning for Best Director for The Hurt Locker.

Though there was a wonderful coincidence, we posted a blog about environmental documentaries last week from the Sundance Film Festival and mentioned The Cove. Well it turns out that this documentary won the 2010 Oscar for best documentary, way to go!

Now I definitely want to see this documentary! How many of you have seen it and what did you think?

Sundance Festival's Green Films

Posted 3/4/2010 1:00:00 PM

While the Sundance Film Festival has been over with for awhile in Park City, Utah there are still a lot of great movies to take a look at. A few of these films happen to be “green films” or environmental documentaries. Some past environmental documentaries shown at the festival which later made it to the theater include: An Inconvenient Truth, The Cove, and Who Killed the Electric Car?

I’m sure most of you have at least heard of the movie An Inconvenient Truth. I actually watched it as an undergrad for extra credit for one of my classes. I enjoyed the movie and it really made me think about my own carbon footprint.
Some of the environmental documentaries from this year’s festival range from documentaries about natural gas extraction in Pennsylvania, the problems with humans being displaced by climate change will have on global security, and arsenic poisoning in Cambodia. ...

GREENZYS founders, Lisa Keyser and Mark Lieber, have found a way to connect a child’s love for animals with a deep concern for the environment. For example, “Peat the Penguin” encourages kids to recycle, reuse, and reduce waste, while “Violet the Giraffe” teaches children to protect the environment by reducing their carbon “paw” print.

“The GREENZYS are a fun and engaging way of involving young children in the daily activities of green living,” said GREENZYS co-founder Mark Lieber in a statement. “We use the animal characters and their stories to reinforce the importance of green living practices such as conservation of natural resources, recycling, ...

This summer, the acclaimed, Oscar contender documentary THE COVE will make its world free television debut on Animal Planet.

The film - which makes an undercover, stealth investigation into the culling and slaughter of thousands of dolphins in remote Taiji, Japan - uses an 'Oceans Eleven'-style approach, bringing to light the dark reality of dolphin massacre.

In his directorial debut, Louis Psihoyos follows former Flipper trainer Ric O'Barry's earnest fight for redemption. O'Barry - who was an active member of the dolphin entertainment industry in the 1960s - came to realize that his role as Flipper's trainer had contributed to grave problems facing dolphins for the past several decades. Now, O'Barry fights to undo the damage that he played a part in by revealing the monstrous massacre that's taking place in various pockets of the world's waters.

The picturesque town of Taiji is the world's largest supplier of dolphins to ...

ANIMAL PLANET REELS IN THE “FISH WHISPERER” MARCH 2ND

Posted 2/10/2010 1:22:00 PM
Debuting Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at 9 pm (CT), Animal Plant christens MADMAN OF THE SEA, a no-holds-barred fishing expedition led by Matt Watson and his band of friends/crew on their most outrageous expeditions. Matt is dubbed the "fish whisperer" by his peers for his ability to lure the biggest, fastest, baddest sea creatures that lurk beneath the surface. He feeds off adrenaline and travels the uncharted seas looking for that next great catch, and he's willing to do anything to find it.

What appeals to us at EcoLifeSTL.com though is that the show contains an underlying message of conservation fueled by Matt's deeply held belief that the sea is one of the greatest gifts we can pass to future generations.

He practices techniques in catch-and-release fishing, emphasizing tagging the fish that he catches so that researchers may better track these species' behavior and migration patterns. These studies are paramount ...
