Ways to Save with Your Appliances

  1. Turn off appliances and unplug cords for smaller devices when practical.
  2. Use your microwave to cook smaller meals.
  3. Reduce your home heating temperatures in the winter and raise your air conditioning temperatures in the summer - even a degree or two can make a sizable difference in your energy consumption and utility costs.
  4. Use fans in the summer to circulate cool air and make your air conditioning more efficient.
  5. Insulate your home, water heaters and pipes.

Energy-Saving Appliances

The average American household spends about $2,200 on energy bills every year, according to the EPA.

A simple change - to use of appliances with the ENERGY STAR label - can save $75 a year in energy costs, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions (a key contributor to global warming).

ENERGY STAR is the government’s seal of approval for energy-saving washers, dryers, dishwashers and other equipment (like computers). The label lets you know the device or appliance is designed and manufactured to use 10–50 percent less energy and water than standard models.

The money you save on utilities can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient ENERGY STAR model.

By paying attention to energy-saving programs like this, the EPA notes that in 2008, Americans saved enough energy to offset greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 29 million cars while saving $19 billion on their utility bills.
