Summer Green School of the Month Award
EcoLifeSTL.com would like to congratulate teacher Ms. Becherer as well as all of the staff and students at Belleville Township High School for all of their green efforts to support the environment.
Belleville Township High School, in East Belleville, IL, has a recycling club, ecology club, science honor society, and BioClub. Their green roots go deeper than that however, as they participate in "Keep Belleville Beautiful" and other clean-ups for local parks.
The school started as a college in the mid 1900's and still has an open campus as if it were a college (the school consists of 20 departmental buildings with landscaped walkways throughout). Their new cafeteria uses mostly natural light through 12ft tall windows, and they also stopped issueing the morning announcements over the intercom. Instead, they now require students to check their emails for school events.
One project that is still in the making would be the addition of a wetland pond on campus. While this would improve their environmental learning, they also have a biannual science trivia night to further educate their students. Just last year, the campus became a certified wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
