Solar Powered Bus
Posted 8/31/2010 7:00:00 AM
Sanyo, most commonly known for their electronics such as music devices and televisions, has added a unique device to their existing portfolio. Sanyo has created a solar powered bus in Japan, called the Solarve Bus.
Sanyo teamed up with local Japanese outlet Ryobi to take the current bus model and incorporate solar panels inside and out. The solar panels provide energy for lighting and the air filtration system in the vehicle.
The vehicle's roof carries photovoltaic panels to generate renewable electricity, which reduces engine load. The Solarve Bus is the world’s first to use solar power in this way, thereby reducing fuel that would otherwise be burned to power the electrical systems.
The bus also contains air purifiers called the Eneloop Air Fresher that are supposed to virtually eliminate all manner of any sort of nasty airborne things that would circulate in a common area with lots ...

Want to be Green? Buy Less Stuff
Posted 8/30/2010 7:00:00 AM
I recently made a big move, and during the packing process I realized just how much stuff I owned. For one person, I really had way too many things in my tiny little apartment. I ended up making a pretty significant donation to the Salvation Army because of all of the stuff that I was still hanging on to that I really didn’t need or want.
In a consumer driven world, we tend to buy, buy buy…but how often do we really need those things? Did you ever find yourself going to the store and buying yourself a brand new outfit, then later finding that you wore it maybe once, twice or not at all?
One way to add greener practices to your life is to simply buy less. While some things we own can be recycled or re-used a lot of our old things end up getting trashed, just ...

LouFest
Posted 8/27/2010 7:00:00 AM
Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Check out LouFest! LouFest is in Forest Park this weekend, August 28-29th and features live music, a kids village and a green Ecozone.
The Ecozone will feature booths with local organizations that are committed to conservation, recycling and clean energy. Check out LouFest Greening.
LouFest is also taking a green approach to the festival as a whole. Free valet bike parking will be available to those who choose to bike it to the festival instead of driving. Metro will also be adding a festival stop to the #3 Forest Park Shuttle to encourage visitors to utilize public transportation and help reduce the amount of vehicle traffic on the roads. It’s all in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint.
AmerenUE Pure Power and 3Degrees will be providing offsets for 100% of the festivals electrical usage, as well as all of the ...

A Greenhouse in Your Own Backyard!
Posted 8/26/2010 7:00:00 AM
A family in Mesa, Arizona have a rather unique garden residing at their home. When they first purchased the property it had an old run-down pool in the backyard. Rather than spend thousands of dollars to fix the pool, or have the pool filled in, they decided to convert it into a garden to help feed the family and live sustainably.
Called the GardenPool, their own little greenhouse produces about 8 fresh eggs a day, unlimited tilapia fish, organic fruit, veggies and herbs all year round. Enough to certainly help feed them and be very green at the same time!
The GardenPool combines the following elements:
- solar power – harnessing and storing the sun’s energy
- water conservation – using less water and recycling waste water
- poultry farming – raising chickens
- aquaculture – raising tilapia fish
- hydroponic gardening – growing fruits, veggies, & herbs without soil
- organic horticulture – using natural methods to ...

Eco Tweets of the Week
Posted 8/25/2010 7:00:00 AM
Each week EcoLifeSTL.com likes to share some of our favorite “Eco-Tweets” of the week. Twitter is a great resource for finding out great information on what is going on in the world of green! Below are our favorite eco-tweets of the week:
1.) @jerrykellyhvac “Did you know that an EPA study proves indoor air is up to five times more polluted than outdoor air? Having a test... http://fb.me/vyRKsc6O”
How clean is the air in your home? Might not be a bad idea to get it tested if you haven’t done so in awhile. Also, that fresh outdoor air is good, so if you can reduce energy costs by shutting off the A/C on those not so hot days all the better!
2.) @walkscore “Commuters waste 4.2 billion hrs & 2.8 billion gallons of gas per year in traffic. Get your custom Commute Report @ http://bit.ly/SP0Lq”
Wow, that is ...
