Milestone for Global Seed Vault

Have any of you heard of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault? What do you think a seed vault is needed for?

It turns out the vault is there as a global insurance policy. It will ensure the survival of a diverse variety of food crops through threats such as droughts, natural disaster, global warming, pests, or disease. This is why this vault has the nickname the “doomsday” vault and it has been around only since February of 2008.

The seeds stored within this vault will also help in re-starting agricultural production at a regional or global scale in the case of a natural or man-made catastrophe takes place. The variety of food crops that is stored in the vault range from lettuce, rice, maize, and wheat; however, the variety of crops stored in the vault is in the millions. Currently a total of 4.5 million varieties or 2 billion seeds ...

You can learn more about International Woman’s Day by clicking here.

Though besides the history and events that took place on Monday. There have been many women who have helped the Environmental and Green movement in the U.S. and around the world. Of course we have the ...

Other uses for Oatmeal

Posted 3/8/2010 7:00:00 AM
How many of you actually enjoy eating oatmeal? I do but only after I’ve put brown sugar in it or if it is the flavored instant kind which I know is not as healthy for me. I also enjoy oatmeal cookies and those new oatmeal to go bars. Did you know that oatmeal can be used for more than just food?

One of the many other uses of oatmeal is to treat the skin by helping to realize the symptoms of sunburns, poison ivy, or other irritants. It can be used to help treat acne. There are oatmeal based scrubs on the market or you can choose to make your own. You can also make your own oatmeal soap.
Another versatile use of oatmeal is as a deodorizer. Feel free to place a container of it in your fridge. Modeling clay can also be formed from oatmeal. Who would have ...

Tips to Declutter

Posted 3/4/2010 7:00:00 AM
It’s close to that time of year to start spring cleaning, but before that why don’t we take a look at the clutter that might be consuming our house. This is an easy process to get us prepared for the spring cleaning to come.

Some easy steps to start the de-cluttering process are:

1.) Toss the obvious. Toss out expired coupons, food, makeup that is more than one year old, worn socks, and etc... I’m sure you get the point here.

2.) Paper makes up one-quarter of all landfill waste this includes junk mail, so help put an end to it. You can do this by registering for the Mail Preference Service on Direct Marketing Association. The price of this is only a $1, your name and address will then be removed from prospective mailing lists. Around 75% of junk mail you receive will end within about 90 days.

3.) ...

Steps to Green IT

How much do you know about Green information technology (IT) or green computing? Do you ever think about the steps you can take to create a better environment for green IT/computing in your home or office?
