Steps to Green IT
Posted 3/3/2010 7:00:00 AM
How much do you know about Green information technology (IT) or green computing? Do you ever think about the steps you can take to create a better environment for green IT/computing in your home or office?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates e-waste accounts for 2 percent of the municipal solid waste stream in the United States. Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT.
Here are a few simple steps you can take:

1.) Purchase low-power hardware, this has the EPA Energy Star on it.

2.) Use the power-saving features of your operating systems, such as standby and hibernate, but make sure to turn your computer off when you leave for the evening.

3.) Get a laptop computer, rather than a desktop. Laptops generally use less energy; up to 50% less in some cases.

4.) Try to go paperless in your office.

5.) Use responsible recycling of old equipment. This ensures that toxic materials in the equipment don’t contaminate groundwater, release pollutants into the air, or harm human health. A better solution is to see to it that poisonous substances are banned altogether from the manufacturing and design process of the equipment you buy.

Here is another great website I found on green computing that may be helpful if you want to learn more. Do you have any other tips to suggest when it comes to green computing?
